Super Easy and Crunchy Apple Oats Crumble Recipe

Super Easy and Crunchy Apple Oats Crumble Recipe

I love to do this homemade apple crisp every time I have some apples in the fridge ready to go, when it is the apple season, or when I have some last-minute guests. It is a super easy dessert to make at the last minute, and if you want to add an extra oomph to the dessert and be crowned as the dessert queen, you can add a scoop of vanilla ice cream when it is still warm, and everybody will love you. If you want to be the top, add some caramel sauce to make your guests lick their fingers.

the final apple crumble

It is my go-to dessert when I need to use apples or pears ready to go, and I feel a little bit lazy to do all the jazz for a homemade apple pie, making dough, letting it rest, rolling, etc. You make the apple filling tossed in a pretty oven-proof tart mould and cover it with the crumble topping. Let it cook until the apples are tender, and serve it warm.

I was inspired to do this this time because we went to the apple orchard to pick our apples with our son. If you have an orchard nearby, I recommend it is a family-friendly experience that everybody will enjoy.

Ingredients:

Filling:

  • Apples (you can use whatever apple you have: Granny Smith apples, pink lady, or any other red apples, etc.)
  • Sugar
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Ground Cloves
  • sultanas or raisins

Crumble:

  • Unsalted Butter
  • White Sugar
  • Rolled Oats

First, you need to peel and slice all the apples, discarding the centre and seeds.  Put the sliced apples in a microwave-proof pan and cook them with the lid on for 7-8 minutes until tender. You can avoid this step if you want a more crunchy topping. Personally, I like tender apples, and all the crunch comes from the crumble. Put the cooked (or raw) apples in a large mixing bowl and mix them with the sugar, cinnamon, cloves and sultanas. Pour them over a greased tart pan. I always like to have those pretty ceramic ones because you will serve the crumble in that pan. Set aside and preheat the oven to 180°C.

Ingredients for the apple crumble

Prepare the crumble by cutting the refrigerated butter (not room temperature) into small cubes. Put them in a bowl and mix them with the oats and sugar. Mix your hands or fork roughly to make a sand texture. You must have some lumps to add extra crispness to the dessert. Add the sand to the apple mixture and cover the whole tart mould.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What other fruits can I use for a crumble?

You can use pears, apricots, rhubarb, strawberries, etc.

Can I use any apples for the recipe?

You can use Granny Smith apples, pink lady, or Red apples.

Should I peel the apples before making a crumble?

Yes, you should peel the fruit to have a more uniform texture.

How do I prevent the apples from turning brown?

If you are peeling the apples ahead of time, you can add a squeeze of lemon juice to prevent the browning.

What kind of topping should I use for the crumble?

You can use vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or custard. Add it to that caramel sauce or toffee sauce, and it will taste incredible.

Should I serve the crumble cold or hot?

It is related to personal preference, but I like it warm with a good scoop of ice cream.

Can I reheat the crumble?

Yes, you can do a few seconds in the microwave before serving it again.

Can I make the crumble gluten-free?

This gluten-free recipe is because I use oats instead of regular flour to crumble.

How do I store leftovers?

You store the crisp apple dessert in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Can I do individual servings instead of a large dish?

You can do it individually; you have to find oven-proof individual moulds.

Description

This apple Oats Crumble is one of my favourite apple desserts. It has basic ingredients but is packed with flavour, and you can use all those sweet apples in season right now. It is the perfect dessert for a heavy dinner because it is not overpowering.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Filling:

  • 810 Apples (any kind of apples you like)
  • 1/2 cup of Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of Ground Cloves
  • 1/2 cup of sultanas or raisins

Crumble:

  • 1/2 cup of Unsalted Butter
  • 1/2 cup of White Sugar
  • 3/4 cup of Oats
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C or 350°F and lightly grease an oven-proof mould. You can use a cooking spray for that.
  2. Peel and cut the apples into thin slices. Put the slices into a microwave-proof container with a lid and cook them for 7-8 minutes until tender. Remove from the container and combine them in a large mixing bowl with the sugar, cinnamon, cloves and sultanas. Set the warm apples aside.
  3. Cut the cold butter into tiny squares and pour it into a mixing bowl for the topping. Add the sugar, oats and salt. Mix all the ingredients by rubbing the ingredients between your hands or with two forks to make a texture like coarse breadcrumbs. Set aside.
  4. To assemble, throw the apples into the greased mould and even them around the pan. Then, throw the crumble mixture into the warm apples and even it so all the mould is covered with the topping ingredients. Bake it for 45 minutes or until the oatmeal topping is golden brown.
  5. Let it rest for a few minutes until it is warm, and serve it with your favourite ice cream, whipped cream or custard.

Notes

  1. You can change the apples for pears, peaches, rhubarb, etc.
  2. You can serve your apple crumble with your favourite ice cream and caramel sauce.
  3. It will keep nice if you store it in the refrigerator up to 5 days. You need to microwave it for a few seconds to warm it.
